I received my Bachelor of Arts in Speech and Hearing Sciences from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN. Then, I earned a Master’s of Science in Speech-Language Pathology from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN. I hold a health professional and teaching license in the state of Indiana and I am ASHA (American Speech & Hearing Association) certified. I am very passionate about ongoing learning and actively seek out opportunities of development to grow personally and professionally.
The majority of my career has been spent working in a school setting. I provided speech and language services to preschool through high school age students with a wide variety of speech and language differences and disorders. I am skilled in evaluating and treating articulation, phonology, apraxia of speech, stuttering, voice, pragmatic language, and receptive and expressive language. I have experience with Autism Spectrum Disorder, genetic disorders (ex. Down syndrome), hearing impairments, developmental delays, and more. While in the schools I was honored as being Teacher of the Year, supervised student teachers, and collaborated with other professionals.
I have also worked in telepractice and private practice settings. In telepractice, I worked with clients across the lifespan, and in the private practice setting, the focus was primarily on early childhood clients. All of these invaluable experiences have provided me with a wealth of knowledge and skills to serve children and their families.

The initial session will be designed to build rapport with your child and gather baseline data. An initial evaluation will be conducted to develop a picture of your child’s speech and language skills.
Formal standardized tests and/or informal assessment tools such as parent questionnaires, play observation, language samples, and checklists may be utilized. Review of other information provided by parents or legal guardians such as medical records, prior evaluations, and Individual Education Plans (IEPs) will also be examined.
-
Following the evaluation a treatment plan will be developed tailoring to your child’s specific speech and language needs and aligning with family goals.
Length of treatment sessions will also be discussed based on the child's need. Typically, sessions will last for 60 minutes; however, 30 minute sessions are an option.
-
Spot on Speech is currently only accepting private pay, but a monthly superbill can be provided to you for reimbursement based on your insurance plan. We encourage all clients to contact their insurance company prior to starting services to inquire about (1) how to submit superbills for reimbursement and (2) what percentage of sessions will be reimbursed.

1. Family Coaching: Would you like tips/strategies for working with your child at home to support and increase communication skills? We can guide you on how to use items already in your home such as toys, puzzles, and books to target specific speech and language skills. Has your child received a recent diagnosis? Testimonials
“When my son, Andrew, was in third grade he worked with Shannon to improve his articulation of the /r/ sound. He worked with her once a week and not only did he make tremendous progress, but he LOVED working with her! She always did fun, interesting activities with him. I think he almost forgot he was working on his speech because he was so engaged in the different lessons. I was amazed at her creativity in planning activities that kept his interest. Within just a few weeks with Shannon, Andrew was self-correcting and family members were noticing a big difference in their ability to understand him.”

“I had the opportunity to work with Shannon Chafin at HSE Schools, from 2021-2022. Shannon served as a great mentor to me as a therapist new to that school district. I found Shannon’s professionalism, organizational skills, and innovative approach to be top notch! She is well respected by her students and her school community. Shannon not only has the skills to help student’s voices be heard, she also finds ways to make sessions fun while making meaningful connections with students along the way. I still hear from students we shared about how much they miss her after they move on from elementary school to intermediate school. Shannon is a wonderful and caring speech therapist. Any student would be lucky to have her!”
